Should I Give Gripe Water To My Baby?

Hi Mommies & Daddies,

When you have a colicky baby people mostly suggest you to give gripe water to your baby 🙂 I never believed in it but when rocking, burping and singing failed in calming him down, I had to convince myself for buying a bottle of gripe water. Gripe water is an old-time home remedy meant to soothe excessive fussiness and gas pain in the babies.

What is Gripe water: Gripe water originally contained a mixture of sugar, sodium bicarbonate and nearly four percent alcohol. Given that beer at this strength can have a calming effect on fully grown adults, it’s easy to see why the mixture produced results among babies.

But now non-alcoholic formulation too available in Indian market. My Dad bought Woodward’s Gripe Water for my  boy. As per brand it is an Ayurvedic formulation with a combination of Dill oil and Sarjikakshara that provides symptomatic relief – from stomach pain caused due to gas, acidity and indigestion in infants and children. It is absolutely safe – strict checks are done at every stage of the manufacturing process to ensure quality and hygiene of the product. Generations of mothers have trusted Woodward’s to provide Colic remedies to their crying babies.

Does Gripe water really works?

Now this is a really difficult question to answer as people using it from ages. No doubt there must be a strong reason for using it from years. But if I have to share my experience then I will say it didn’t worked in case of my boy. We used around two bottles of Gripe water but it failed in calming down my boy. Finally I decided to consult my baby’s doc & he suggested him Anti-colic drops (brand name I will not suggest). And it did wonder & our life become more easy 😉

So I will say that I did not found it effective & discontinued it’s usage for my boy 🙂

Why it can be unsafe for a baby?

  1. Alcohol: The crying infant is soothed instantly due to the alcohol in it, and goes to sleep. In olden days the content of alcohol was way too high.
  2. Sugar: The alcohol content is replaced by the sugar. Sugar solutions are very effective in soothing colic in babies, but the sugar content can have a negative impact on erupting baby teeth. Also doctors advise no salt and no sugar till the age of one – as early exposure to sugar causes diabetes.
  3. Dill Oil: This component is used to ease the pain caused due to gas in baby’s intestines. The gas is the main reason for colic in infants. Experts recommend only breast milk for the first 6 months. Long term effects of dill oil on babies needs more study, and shouldn’t be given unless advised by a doctor.
  4. Sodium bicarbonate: This ingredient does not have much effect to cure colic in babies. additionally, it can have a negative impact and lead to alkalosis.

How To Take Care Of Baby’s Umbilical Cord

Hi Mommies & Daddies,

During pregnancy nutrients are transferred from mommy to baby via Umbilical cord. Post delivery your baby has a purplish-blue stump which is around a half inch to an inch long. It generally takes 1 or 2 weeks to this stump for drying and falling off. During this period (1 to 2 weeks) you have to take care of it. In this post I am sharing few things which you have do to take care of it 🙂

Steps:

  • Soak a Q-tip in the warm water and squeeze away to take out excess water.
  • Use the Q-tip to gently wipe around the belly button, removing any residue.
  • Be gentle while doing this.
  • Use a clean towel to pat the area dry.
  • My doctor also gave a medicinal powder to sprinkle on it. I am not mentioning it’s name (I think I should not.) So if your doctor also suggests then you can also go for it 🙂

You have to do it once in a day until the cord falls off. In case you have any doubt do consult your doctor 🙂

Remember on thing that your baby’s cord is still attached, do not submerge him or her in water for bath time. It is always safe to go for sponge bath.

10 Symptoms That Your Baby Is Teething

Hi Mommies & Daddies,

Generally baby starts teething six months around but it can happen even more early say at 3 months. It is the bottom front teeth that come through first, followed by the top front teeth and then the incisors and finally the molars. There are few symptoms that  will give you idea that your baby may be teething 🙂

Your baby will start biting more. Biting helps to relieve the pressure they feel on their gums. So he/she will biting you, her toys or even the furniture.

Baby also starts drooling a lot. When my baby started teething he used to drool like anything.

Like biting, your baby may start sucking thumb or finger. This is because he/she trying to relieve the pressure from a tooth that’s about to come up from the gums.

This was a bit strange but my baby used to bang is head (slowly) on wall. I am not sure but I think it was due to the pain he must be facing due to the sore gums.

Some babies may pull on their ears to help relieve the pain due to those sore gums.

During teething your baby may remain cranky, fussy or irritated. This is again because  of those sore gums. We can’t do much in this but be patients & keep cuddling your little one 🙂

Your baby may also face high temperature during teething. But don’t take it for granted as it can be due to illness or infection. So visit your baby’s doctor Asap.

During teething your baby may face loss of appetite. He/she will start refusing food & milk.

Many babies start pooping a lot during teething. My boy used to poop only once in a day but at that time he started pooping 5-6 times. But as I said not take it for granted, do visit your baby’s doctor to keep eyes on her/his health. Loose motions can also cause dehydration which can be really dangerous.

Due to the discomfort from the swelling and soreness, your baby may find it difficult to sleep at night or during nap-time.

  • I am not an expert and all these information provided on the basis of experience with my baby and all the babies (my friends, relatives etc) around 😉

Things You Should Avoid Eating & Drinking During Pregnancy

Hello everyone!!

Pregnancy is that stage of life which brings the maximum happiness and a whole lot of new rays of hope in a female’s life. This stage brings excitement in the would-be mother as well as also her near and dear ones. This also follows the flood gates of suggestions, may it be from family, relatives, neighbors and who not..

The loads of advice also at times make the concerned person confused regarding what advice to take and what to let it go. So today I will be sharing with you all, the would-be mommies, the list of things that should not be eating as well as drinking during this stage of life.

The list goes as follows:

  1. Raw/Unpasteurized milk: Being rich in Calcium, milk in general is really good for health during the time of pregnancy. But raw/unpasteurized milk might result in indigestion. So it is advisable to avoid raw milk during the time of pregnancy. Also do avoid drinking milk immediately after taking it out of the fridge.
  2. Jackfruit and Brinjal: You are advised to reduce the intake of these two veggies during the time of pregnancy. Smaller quantity intake is manageable, but do avoid taking these in large quantity as well as frequency.
  3. Tea/Coffee: These should be avoided as they are rich in caffeine content and caffeine is not at all beneficial during the time of pregnancy. If you are too much used to having tea/coffee and its becoming difficult for you to completely stop it, start with reducing the frequency of the same. In general there is a normal tendency of acidity during pregnancy, and if you consume too much of tea/coffee, it adds on to the acidity effect. Along with it, also do avoid cold drinks during this time.
  4. Spicy Food: Spicy foods are generally difficult to digest and also it can add on to acidity. Prefer having home food and forget outside food for a while.
  5. Alcohol and Smoking: These two affects the development of the baby in the mother’s womb, and thus is advised to strictly avoid them.
  6. Cardamom: It generates heat in body, and thus again is advised to avoid. Mixing it with tea at times is fine, but do avoid in large quantities.
  7. Un-prescribed Medicines: This is to be strictly avoided without the advice of doctor. During the time of pregnancy, you might at times feel some or the other issues, but even for that don’t immediately grab a medicine without the prescription of an authorised doctor.
  8. Papaya and Pineapple: These two fruits have high Vitamin C content and I personally was strictly told by my doctor to avoid these two during the time of pregnancy.
  9. Raw/Uncooked Meat: If you are a non-vegetarian, do avoid eating half boiled eggs or half cooked meat. Also do strictly avoid taking junk foods. I do agree that food cravings increases during the time of pregnancy, but junk foods should be a strict NO.

So ya, these are all the things that you should be avoiding during the time of pregnancy.

6 Ways To Prepare Your Toddler For Pre-school

When we decided to send our boy to pre-school we knew that it going be really difficult. I never leave him alone & he has a habit of seeing his mom 24*7. Believe me I cried harder than him (he he. motherhood is damn difficult), my heart was sinking with the thought of that anxiety which my boy must be going through. But we did it in a wonderful way & my boy got settled in his pre-school in just three days. So in this post I am sharing some easy ways to prepare your toddler for pre-school.

1. Create some excitement: Start telling him or her that he/she will enjoy there a lot. I used to say “Now Aarav will have many new friends”. You can also tell him or her stories about pre-school during the bed time. Take him or her on a trip to see his/ her new school and introduce him with the things like classroom, toys etc. Also have some chit chat session with your kid’s class teacher in front of him so he or she can be familiar with the class teacher.

2. Pack his/her favorite food: Pack best you can for his/her lunch box. When staff will offer him his/her favorite food then your kid will not only accept it easily but this will also help in developing a bond between them. So this in turn will make your baby easily adapt in the school.

3. Allow him to carry his/her favorite toy: I allowed my boy to carry one of his favorite thing to the school. He generally used to carry his favorite car in his hand. I have noticed that this treasured object to school makes your child to feel connected to you. After few days he stopped carrying that car to school. So I guess it is because he got adapted to this new place (school).

4. Be there: In the initial days be available, I used to wait outside the school for three hours. Yes! I did this for whole month. In the initial days whenever he used to be cranky (when teachers were not able to handle him). I used to be there to calm him down. This gave him an assurance that I am around. Luckily my boy did this for only first three days still I used to wait outside & once I got convinced that now he is comfortable I stopped waiting outside.

5. Build his/her trust: When you are dropping him to a new place then give him a trust that you will be back. Make a routine of reaching school at a regular time. In initial days you should reach a bit early because if other parents will be there & you will not then it will make you kid upset. Once I reached late & my boy got so angry that he denied to come with me (he he) & it took almost 30 minutes to convince him that I won’t be late again.

6. Reward: Give him a reward like candy or kiss saying that it is because “You are a good baby”. This will motivate your kid to give a reason to well behave in the school 🙂

These are things which I followed to my baby settle down in school. 99 % he loves going school & 1% he wants to have a lazy day at home 😉
